Ro isn't Ozempic. Ro is a telehealth service, and Ozempic is a Novo Nordisk medicine approved for type 2 diabetes. Ro's providers can prescribe Ozempic, including off-label for weight loss when they think it fits. With insurance, your plan sets the price. Without it, Ro quotes the list price, $900 to $1,100, plus Ro's membership.
For most people searching "Ro Ozempic" who want to lose weight and don't have diabetes, the cheaper and on-label choice on Ro is usually Wegovy, which is the same ingredient.
The RX Index is the independent GLP-1 decision resource that scores telehealth providers and treatment paths on clinical legitimacy, care quality, transparency, access, and cost, so readers can choose the path that fits their situation.
RX Index Decision Verdict: Ro is a reasonable way to get Ozempic if you have commercial insurance that covers it, usually because you have type 2 diabetes. If you're paying cash for weight loss, Ozempic through Ro is the expensive route.
- Best for: adults with commercial insurance that covers Ozempic who want help with prior authorization and follow-up care online.
- Not ideal for: cash payers who want weight loss (Wegovy on Ro costs far less), and people on Medicaid, which Ro doesn't accept.
- The factor that matters most: whether your plan covers Ozempic for you. Many plans cover it for type 2 diabetes and may not cover off-label weight-loss use.

Is Ro the same as Ozempic?
No. This is the most common mix-up behind searches like "is Ro Ozempic" and "Ro vs Ozempic."
- Ro is a telehealth company. Its weight-loss membership, called Ro Body, connects you with licensed providers online, who can prescribe GLP-1 medicines and help with insurance.
- Ozempic is a brand-name semaglutide injection made by Novo Nordisk. It's one of several medicines Ro's providers can prescribe.
So "Ro vs Ozempic" isn't really a choice between two products. The real choices are which medicine fits you (Ozempic, Wegovy, Zepbound or another option) and where you get it (Ro, your own doctor or another provider). Our Ozempic vs Wegovy comparison covers the medicine side.
Does Ro prescribe Ozempic for weight loss?
It can, but only off-label and only if a provider decides it's appropriate. Ro's Ozempic page says Ozempic "is not FDA-approved for weight loss, but may be prescribed off-label if a provider deems it appropriate."
Here's what the FDA label covers. Ozempic is approved, with diet and exercise, to improve blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It's also approved to lower the risk of heart attack, stroke and heart-related death in adults with type 2 diabetes and heart disease, and to lower the risk of kidney disease getting worse in adults with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease.
Wegovy has the same active ingredient, semaglutide, and it is FDA-approved for weight management. That's why, for weight loss without diabetes, a provider is more likely to point you to Wegovy.
| Ozempic | Wegovy | |
|---|---|---|
| Ingredient | Semaglutide | Semaglutide |
| FDA-approved for | Type 2 diabetes (plus heart and kidney risk reduction in type 2 diabetes) | Weight management, and heart risk reduction in adults with heart disease and obesity or overweight |
| Weekly pen doses | 0.25, 0.5, 1 and 2 mg | 0.25 mg up to 2.4 mg, and 7.2 mg (Wegovy HD) |
| Cash price on Ro | List price, $900 to $1,100 (Ro's figure) | $199 for the first two fills, then $349 ($399 for HD) |
| Insurance through Ro | Yes | Yes |
How much does Ozempic cost on Ro?
It depends almost entirely on insurance.
With insurance. Ro's insurance team checks your coverage and handles prior authorization. If your plan covers Ozempic, the prescription goes to your pharmacy and you pay your plan's copay. If you have commercial insurance that covers Ozempic, Novo Nordisk's savings card can bring the cost to as little as $25 a month (up to $100 a month in savings, for up to 48 months; government plans excluded). Insurance never pays the Ro membership.
Without insurance. Ro says "you can pay the list price of $900-$1,100." Novo Nordisk's posted list price is $1,027.51 per one-pen package. Ro doesn't show an Ozempic price on its main pricing page the way it does for Wegovy and Zepbound.
| What you pay | Medicine | Ro membership (monthly plan) | Ro membership (annual plan, monthly equivalent) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ozempic, insured, $25 card price (if eligible) | $25 | $149 | $74 |
| Ozempic, cash at Ro's quoted list price | $900 to $1,100 | $149 | $74 |
| Wegovy pen, cash, months 1 and 2 | $199 | $39 first month, then $149 | $39 first month, then $74 |
| Wegovy pen, cash, month 3 onward | $349 | $149 | $74 |
Our math, from Ro's and Novo Nordisk's posted prices. Your first Ro month costs $39 instead of the plan price.
If you filled Ozempic once a month at Ro's quoted list price, a year of medicine alone would be $10,800 to $13,200. By comparison, a first year of Wegovy pens on Ro is about $4,237 in medicine at Ro's posted cash prices (13 four-pen boxes). Membership adds $927 to $1,678 to either, depending on your plan.
One more thing to know: Novo Nordisk sells Ozempic to self-pay patients through NovoCare Pharmacy for $199 for the first two months, then $349 a month (up to 1 mg) or $499 a month (2 mg), with a valid prescription. Ro's Ozempic page doesn't mention that option, and we couldn't confirm whether Ro can send your prescription there. Ask Ro before you pay list price.

Can you get Ozempic through Ro with insurance?
Yes. Ro says only three medicines can go through insurance on Ro: the Wegovy pen, the Zepbound autoinjector pen and Ozempic.
How it works, per Ro:
- You do an online visit. Ro says you'll know if you're eligible within 2 days.
- A provider reviews your health history and decides which GLP-1, if any, fits you.
- Ro's insurance team checks coverage and submits prior authorization if needed. Ro says this takes about 1 to 2 weeks.
- If you're covered, the prescription goes to your pharmacy for pickup. If you're not, Ro says your provider will suggest other FDA-approved cash-pay GLP-1 options. If you're denied, Ro says its team can file an appeal.
The catch for weight loss: Ro's own guide notes that "your insurance provider may not cover off-label use of Ozempic for weight loss." Plans usually tie Ozempic coverage to a type 2 diabetes diagnosis. For more, read does insurance cover Ozempic and our Ozempic prior authorization guide.
Can you get Ozempic on Ro with Medicare or Medicaid?
Not through insurance. Ro says it can't coordinate GLP-1 coverage for government plans.
- Medicare, Medicare supplement and TRICARE: Ro says you may still be able to use certain cash-pay options. That doesn't include Medicare paying for your Ozempic through Ro.
- Medicaid: Ro says Medicaid patients aren't eligible for treatment on Ro.
- Federal employees (FEHB): Ro says you can join and use its insurance team.
Novo Nordisk says Medicaid and Medicare Part D patients can use its self-pay option, but not the $25 savings card. See does Medicare cover Ozempic and does Medicaid cover Ozempic.
Ozempic safety: what to know before you start
Ozempic has a boxed warning, the FDA's most serious kind. In studies with rodents, semaglutide caused thyroid C-cell tumors, including cancer. It isn't known whether it causes these tumors in people.
Do not use Ozempic if you or a family member has had medullary thyroid cancer (MTC), or if you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
The most common side effects in the label are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain and constipation. The label also warns about pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, low blood sugar when used with insulin or sulfonylureas, kidney problems from dehydration, serious allergic reactions, diabetic eye problems and food entering the lungs during anesthesia or deep sedation, so tell any surgeon or anesthesia team you take it. Never share an Ozempic pen, even with a new needle.
Who should get Ozempic through Ro?
| Your situation | Our take |
|---|---|
| Type 2 diabetes, commercial insurance that covers Ozempic | Ro can be a convenient way to get it, with insurance help. You pay the membership on top. |
| No diabetes, want to lose weight, paying cash | Ask about Wegovy instead. It's the same ingredient, approved for weight loss, and far cheaper on Ro. |
| No diabetes, insurance covers weight-loss drugs | Ask Ro to check Wegovy and Zepbound coverage too, since those are approved for weight loss. |
| Already have a doctor who prescribes Ozempic | You may not need Ro's membership. Your doctor can use your insurance or Novo Nordisk's self-pay pharmacy. |
| Medicaid | Ro isn't an option. Look at your state plan's rules. |
| Want an Ozempic pill | We found no Ozempic pill on Ro. Read how to get the Ozempic pill online. |
