Ro vs PlushCare: Which One Costs Less for You?

By The RX Index Editorial Team · Last verified

Ro vs PlushCare comes down to your insurance and how many doctor visits you'll need. PlushCare's paid membership is $19.99 monthly, plus insured visit charges or $129 self-pay visits. Ro starts at $39, then $149 monthly, with up to 24 consults a year included. Medicine costs extra at both.

The RX Index is the independent GLP-1 decision resource that scores telehealth providers and treatment paths on clinical legitimacy, care quality, transparency, access, and cost, so readers can choose the path that fits their situation.

With low insured visit costs, PlushCare costs less in the examples below. At $129 per visit, Ro's prepaid yearly plan costs less starting at six visits with PlushCare's monthly membership, or seven with its annual membership, under the model below. PlushCare's published notice excludes Original Medicare Part B patients, even for cash.

The tables below show the first bill and a 12-period estimate — plus what neither price includes. The calculator uses your actual dates for a first-year estimate.

RX Index Decision Verdict

PlushCare wins on care fees in the low-copay examples below. Ro can cost less when you'd pay cash for frequent follow-ups and choose a prepaid plan. Its free pen check can help before you choose either provider.

What Ro vs PlushCare really cost

Ro and PlushCare charge for care in different ways. Ro bundles follow-up care into a membership with a consultation limit. PlushCare's standard paid plan has a small membership fee plus a charge every time you see the doctor. Medicine, and sometimes lab work, cost extra at both.

Think of it like a phone plan. Ro is a flat-price plan with a limit on included calls. PlushCare is a cheap base plan where you pay per call. Which one is cheaper depends on how much you call — and who's paying for the calls.

Care fees by plan (medicine not included)

Prices checked October 23, 2026. These tables model one intro or trial period, followed by 11 paid membership periods. They are not exact calendar-year bills: PlushCare's 30-day trial and monthly renewals can put a different number of charges inside a year. The PlushCare rows assume 2 visits in period one, 1 in period four, and 6 across the full window. That's an example, not a schedule — your doctor decides how often you're seen.

These rows use PlushCare's standard paid membership. Its terms say paying the membership fee isn't required to get medical care. If you'd rather skip it, ask PlushCare about access without a membership before you book — we couldn't confirm what that costs or includes. PlushCare terms

Care fees by plan (medicine not included)
PlanFirst periodFourth period12-period estimate
Ro, monthly$39$149$1,678
Ro, 12-month prepay$39 (then $888 at the first renewal)$0 new membership charge (already paid)$927
PlushCare monthly, insured visits (example: $30 per visit)$60$49.99$399.89
PlushCare monthly, cash visits ($129 per visit)$258$148.99$993.89

How we did the math, so you can check it:

  • Ro monthly: $39 + (11 × $149) = $1,678. Ro pricing
  • Ro 12-month prepay: $39 + $888 = $927. That $888 covers 12 months after the intro, so you're paid up into period 13 in this model. Ro advertises it as $74 a month, but it's one $888 charge, not $74 at a time.
  • PlushCare membership: a 30-day free trial, then $19.99 a month — $219.89 for the 11 paid periods modeled here. A yearly plan is $149 after the trial and also extends beyond this window. PlushCare pricing FAQ
  • PlushCare visits: $129 each without insurance. With insurance, you pay what your plan says. PlushCare pricing FAQ

Ro also sells 3-month ($297) and 6-month ($534) prepaid plans. Across this 12-period model, those come to $1,227 and $1,107, with service prepaid into period 13. Ro pricing

With insurance, a copay is a set amount you pay for a covered service. A deductible is what you pay toward applicable covered costs before your plan starts sharing them. Coinsurance is your percentage of a covered bill. In-network means the doctor has a contract with your plan. Your actual visit charge can include more than a copay.

The visit count where the cheaper one changes

This is the part most comparisons skip. PlushCare's cost goes up with every billable visit. Ro's doesn't, as long as you stay within its 24 included consults a year.

The visit count where the cheaper one changes

12$1,767.89$1,697$579.89$927$1,678

What this tells you:

  • With low insured visit costs, PlushCare's fees stay far below Ro's at every visit count shown.
  • Paying cash for visits, the break-even point depends on the membership. In this model, Ro's 12-month prepay costs less starting at 6 visits with PlushCare's monthly membership, or 7 with its annual membership. Against Ro's monthly plan, both PlushCare options stay cheaper through 11 cash visits; Ro costs less at 12.
  • Lab costs aren't in these numbers. Ro includes provider-ordered lab testing, but its terms allow charges for additional tests. At PlushCare, labs are billed to your insurance or paid separately.

None of this tells you how often you should see a doctor. That's your clinician's call, not a way to win a price comparison.

What neither price includes

Medicine. Neither membership includes your GLP-1. Your bill depends on the medicine, your coverage, and the pharmacy or manufacturer offer. PlushCare can send eligible prescriptions through manufacturer programs too, including Zepbound vials through LillyDirect (PlushCare Zepbound page). Ro lists its own cash prices (below) and says they match LillyDirect, NovoCare, and TrumpRx (Ro pricing). Compare the same product, dose, supply and offer before adding each service's care fees.

Extra care. Ro's membership includes up to 24 consults a year. After that, each one is $15, and extra lab tests cost more (Ro terms). PlushCare charges $75 if you miss a visit or cancel or reschedule within 2 hours. For a cancellation or no-show, that replaces the quoted visit charge; don't count both (PlushCare FAQ).

Insurance surprises. PlushCare charges an estimate when you book an insured visit. After your insurer processes the claim — PlushCare says it usually hears back within about 4 weeks — you may owe more or get money back (PlushCare pricing FAQ, billing policy).

Worked example: insured, using PlushCare vs Ro

This is a made-up example using the same 12-period model. Say you're 52, your job's Blue Cross plan covers Wegovy, and after your plan pays, you owe $25 a fill. Your final patient charge is $30 per telehealth visit. Your doctor wants 2 visits in period one, then 4 more across the window, including one in period four — 6 visits total. Your PlushCare labs are covered in this example, and Ro orders no tests outside its included care. You owe nothing extra for labs or delivery. For this example only, you pay for 12 fills, with one in period one and one in period four.

Worked example: insured, using PlushCare vs Ro
First periodFourth period12-period estimate
PlushCare (monthly membership)$60 visits + $25 medicine = $85$19.99 + $30 visit + $25 = $74.99$399.89 care + $300 medicine = $699.89
Ro (monthly)$39 + $25 = $64$149 + $25 = $174$1,678 + $300 = $1,978
Ro (12-month prepay)$39 + $25 = $64$25$927 + $300 = $1,227

In this example, PlushCare costs $527.11 less across the window than Ro's prepaid plan and $1,278.11 less than Ro monthly. Ro bundles insurance paperwork, provider messaging, coaching, and certain labs into its fee. PlushCare also helps with prior authorization, so compare the support and extra charges you'd actually use.

One catch on fills: many GLP-1 pens come as a 4-week supply. Thirteen 4-week fills cover 364 days, and charge timing can put another fill inside a calendar-year window. Use your actual pharmacy count; the 12 fills above are an example, not a year's supply promise.

What we actually verified (October 23, 2026) We read Ro's pricing, insurance, coverage-checker, and terms pages, and PlushCare's pricing FAQ, weight-loss, terms, billing, refund, and Medicare pages, then built the tables above from those numbers. We also checked the drug labels and manufacturer offer terms linked below. These are published prices and policies, not bills. We didn't sign up, get treated, or test checkout. Provider-stated, not independently confirmed: PlushCare's "most in-network patients pay $30 or less," Ro's timelines, and Ro's claim that its cash prices match manufacturer programs. Couldn't pin down: PlushCare's price and features without a paid membership, how often PlushCare doctors schedule GLP-1 follow-ups, and PlushCare's total cash lab cost for weight care. PlushCare's main pricing pages say $19.99 a month; a few newer pages say "starts at $19." We used $19.99. If a price differs from your selected offer, confirm the final charge before paying.

The right pick isn't the same for everyone. It depends on your state, your insurance and its drug list, whether you want an FDA-approved or compounded medicine, a pill or a shot, and your budget. What you get from Ro vs PlushCare

Ro is a focused GLP-1 weight-loss membership: you do an online visit, message your care team, and get medicine shipped or sent to your pharmacy. PlushCare is an online primary care office: you book video visits with a board-certified doctor, who can also treat other health problems. Both prescribe FDA-approved brand-name medicines.

Can you use Ro or PlushCare with your coverage?

Your coverage can rule one of them out before price even matters. PlushCare's Medicare notice says it stopped accepting Medicare Part B on January 1, 2026, and can't take cash from affected Part B patients. PlushCare says it doesn't accept Medicaid; Ro says Medicaid members are not eligible for treatment.

Not sure which Medicare coverage you have? Check whether your red, white, and blue Medicare card lists Part B and whether you also have a Medicare Advantage or Part C plan. Part D is drug coverage and can sit alongside Original Medicare. PlushCare's notice distinguishes Original Medicare from Medicare Advantage; some older pages still list Medicare as accepted, so confirm your exact plan directly before booking.

Say you're 66, on Original Medicare with a Part D drug plan. Under PlushCare's published Part B notice, you cannot book there. Start with your prescriber and Part D plan. If you need a GLP-1 for weight management, check whether you qualify for the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge; CMS requires eligible Part D enrollment and clinical criteria. A prescription for an indication covered by Part D goes through that benefit instead (CMS). If you're on Medicaid, start with your state plan and GLP-1 providers that accept Medicaid.

Does insurance cover the care, the medicine, or both?

Coverage for a doctor visit and coverage for a medicine are two separate questions. PlushCare can bill eligible visits to your insurance; Ro's membership is always cash. Both help with the paperwork to get medicine covered, but your insurance company makes the final call.

What prior authorization is — and isn't

Prior authorization is a permission check from your insurance company. When your plan requires it, the insurer reviews proof that you meet its rules — which can include your BMI (body mass index), health conditions, and what you've tried before. Ro and PlushCare both describe help with this paperwork. Neither can promise approval.

For weight-loss or diabetes injections, PlushCare says the paperwork starts after your doctor prescribes. You'll provide the pharmacy-benefit numbers on your insurance card (Rx BIN, PCN, and member ID) before the follow-up visit. For other medicines, ask the care team how to start a requested prior authorization. If the insurer says no, ask about an appeal, a covered alternative or an eligible cash-pay offer (PlushCare weight-loss FAQ).

At Ro, the concierge checks your benefits and files the paperwork after a Ro provider prescribes. If coverage comes through, the prescription goes to your pharmacy. If not, your provider suggests an FDA-approved cash-pay option (Ro insurance).

Want the full process? See how to get insurance to cover a GLP-1 and what to do if you're denied.

Check your coverage before you pay for care

Here's the honest limit: no comparison page, including this one, can guarantee that your plan will approve a GLP-1. Your plan decides. What you can do before spending money on visits is check the drug benefit and any approval rules.

Ro offers a free coverage check for three products: the Ozempic pen, Wegovy pen, and Zepbound autoinjector pen. Ro contacts your plan and emails you a report. It's not a prescription or a prior authorization, and it doesn't cover the Wegovy pill, Foundayo, or Zepbound KwikPen. Ro advertises a $50 credit toward starting treatment for new accounts after the report arrives; we have not deducted it from the cost examples (Ro coverage checker). You can use the report to decide between Ro and PlushCare — it's yours either way.

If one of those three pens is what you're considering, it makes sense to check your coverage before you book anything.

Ro prices are for the medicine only. Add Ro's membership on top. The self-pay offers shown require a prescription for an FDA-approved use and payment outside insurance. You cannot seek insurance reimbursement or count that cost toward your deductible or out-of-pocket limit (NovoCare terms, Ro's LillyDirect terms). Manufacturer eligibility rules apply, and taxes or other fees may apply. A 28-day supply is four weeks, not a calendar month. Your clinician sets your dose; these tables aren't dosing advice.

If a discount ends or you miss its refill condition, the price can rise. Lilly lists regular Foundayo prices of $199 at 2.5 mg, $299 at 5.5 mg and $349 at 14.5 mg or 17.2 mg. For Zepbound vials or KwikPen, it lists $499 at 7.5 mg and $699 at 10–15 mg without the purchase offer. Confirm the final charge for your selected pharmacy and offer.

FDA-approved and compounded aren't the same thing

Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved. The FDA says it doesn't review them for safety, effectiveness, or quality before they're sold (FDA). We verified the branded options shown here, not a currently available compounded program. PlushCare still has compounded-semaglutide information tied to FDA shortage status; that page does not establish that you can obtain it today. Our compounded vs brand-name guide explains the difference.

The FDA lists the semaglutide and tirzepatide injection shortages as resolved, and the temporary grace periods tied to those shortages have ended. Patient-specific compounding can still qualify under legal conditions, but routine copies cannot rely on the old shortage. The rules differ for pharmacies and outsourcing facilities (FDA compounding policy).

Which one fits you?

Choose the care you need and the bill you can live with. A lower membership fee doesn't always mean a lower total, and a pricier program doesn't mean better treatment. Start with three quick checks:

  1. If you're an adult starting weight-management treatment, is your BMI 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with a weight-related condition like high blood pressure? Those are common starting thresholds (FDA). If you're already taking a GLP-1, ask your clinician about continuing treatment; a lower BMI after weight loss is not a reason to decide on your own to stop. Not sure where you fit? See the GLP-1 BMI eligibility chart.
  2. Do you know whether your plan covers GLP-1s for weight? If not, check your member portal, or use Ro's free pen check above.
  3. Will you pay cash for the medicine? Then compare the same medicine, dose, and supply at both places.

When neither is the right call

If you're under 18, pregnant or planning a pregnancy, have type 1 diabetes, or have a history of an eating disorder, talk with your own doctor or a specialist before choosing an online weight-loss program. These are different clinical situations, not one blanket drug ban.

The FDA-approved GLP-1 medicines listed above must not be used by people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN 2). A previous serious allergic reaction to a medicine or its ingredients also rules out that medicine; see the prescribing information linked above. PlushCare says it won't treat active eating disorders with weight-loss medicine. Our GLP-1 hard contraindications guide explains the distinction.

When PlushCare makes sense

PlushCare fits if you'd like a real doctor on video, your insurance covers telehealth visits, and you'd value one place for weight care and everyday health needs. Check that your plan is in-network and what your visit will actually cost — PlushCare's estimate can change after your insurer processes the claim.

PlushCare's published process starts prior authorization after a doctor prescribes. If you want benefit information before paying for a visit, Ro's free pen check is a useful first step. Because PlushCare can bill visits to insurance, it can cost far less when your plan gives you a low visit charge.

If visit-based care fits you, confirm your plan, your visit cost, and your membership choice before you book.

When Ro makes sense

Ro fits if you want a focused GLP-1 program with one predictable care fee, provider messaging, coaching, and a team that handles insurance paperwork for supported pens. It also fits if you're paying cash and want the medicine price listed before you start, shipped to your door.

Ro's membership is a real extra cost, even when your medicine is covered, and it never counts toward your deductible. If you already have a doctor who'll prescribe and do the paperwork, you may not need it.

If a focused program fits you and the membership-plus-medicine total works for your budget, you can review Ro's current plans and prices.

What happens after you sign up?

Both start with a clinician's review, and both may need lab work. Getting an appointment isn't the same as getting a prescription, insurance approval, or medicine in hand.

Before you compare prices, ask PlushCare which tests you'll need, whether recent results from your own doctor count, what the labs will cost you, and whether reviewing them takes another paid visit. At Ro, ordered labs are included, but extra tests can be billed.

Messaging isn't the same as an urgent appointment. Ro's terms say its care runs on weekday business hours and isn't an on-call service. For urgent medical concerns, contact your clinician. For a medical emergency, call 911.

What if you're not prescribed, denied, or want to cancel?

Not getting a prescription, getting denied by insurance, and canceling are three different events — and each has its own refund rule. Check the one that matches what happened.

What if you're not prescribed, denied, or want to cancel?
What happensRoPlushCare
No medicine prescribedIf never prescribed after the initial review, your purchase price is refunded and renewing membership does not beginA completed assessment can remain billable without a prescription. If you're switching mid-treatment, line up your next prescriber and refills before you cancel. Ro's terms recommend talking with your provider before stopping a medicine.

Five questions to ask before you pay

Copy these and ask them before you book. Get the answers in writing if you can.

  1. "What will I pay today, and what's the next automatic charge and its date?"
  2. "Is my exact plan in-network for this visit, and what happens if I haven't met my deductible?"
  3. "Which labs and follow-up visits do you expect, and which are billed separately?"
  4. "What's the pharmacy price for this exact medicine, form, dose, and supply?"
  5. "What's refunded if I'm not prescribed, my insurance says no, or I cancel?"

How we checked this comparison

We read both companies' public pricing, insurance, and policy pages on October 23, 2026, then did the math shown above. We didn't enroll, receive care, test checkout, or see anyone's insurance decision.

Our methodology weighs six factors: clinical legitimacy and safety (25%), care and support model (20%), medication options and fit (15%), transparency and honest terms (15%), value / true cost (15%), and access and speed (10%). This page uses a Decision Verdict rather than a numeric score. Some things only you can find out: your plan's network and drug list, your visit charge, your lab order, your pharmacy price, and your clinician's decision. Policy dates matter too: Ro's terms were last revised April 2, 2026; PlushCare's terms took effect July 31, 2026; PlushCare's Medicare change took effect January 1, 2026.

Ro vs PlushCare FAQ

Will insurance cover the doctor visit and the medicine?

They're separate benefits. PlushCare can bill eligible in-network visits to your insurance, while Ro's membership is always cash. Whether your medicine is covered depends on your exact plan, drug, and any prior authorization.

Can I check drug coverage before paying for a visit?

Yes. Start with your insurer's member portal or the pharmacy benefits number on your card. Ro also checks coverage for free for the Ozempic, Wegovy, and Zepbound pens, but not the Wegovy pill, Foundayo, or Zepbound KwikPen. That report isn't a prescription or final approval.

Does PlushCare always order labs?

Don't assume it's the same for everyone. PlushCare's weight-loss page says labs are often required, and its Wegovy-pill page says valid labs from the last 3 months are needed for that prescription. Ask whether recent results from your own doctor count.

Does every PlushCare refill need a paid visit?

PlushCare doesn't publish one schedule for everyone, and the membership includes online prescription renewal requests. Your doctor decides how often you need to be seen. Ask up front, and use the calculator to try different visit counts.

Is PlushCare cheaper than Ro?

With a low insured visit charge, it can be. In our 12-period model, Ro's $927 intro-plus-annual payment beats PlushCare's care fees starting at 6 cash visits with monthly membership, or 7 with annual membership. Use your actual billing dates and visit charges; medicine costs extra at both.

Does PlushCare require a membership?

PlushCare's terms say paying the membership fee isn't required to receive medical care. That doesn't mean you get every membership feature without it, and we couldn't confirm the price that way. Ask PlushCare before you book.

Does PlushCare accept Medicare or Medicaid?

PlushCare's Medicare notice says it stopped accepting Part B on January 1, 2026, and can't take cash from Part B patients, though it accepts some Medicare Advantage plans. PlushCare says it doesn't accept Medicaid. Ro says Medicaid members aren't eligible for its program either.

Can I get a GLP-1 pill from Ro or PlushCare?

Both list the Wegovy pill and Foundayo. At Ro, both pills are cash-pay and start at $149 per 30-day supply at the lowest strength, plus membership; other strengths and offer terms change the price. A clinician decides whether either fits you.

Do Ro or PlushCare offer compounded semaglutide or tirzepatide?

We did not verify a currently available compounded program at either provider. PlushCare still has compounded-semaglutide information tied to FDA shortage status, which does not establish current access. Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved, and the FDA doesn't review them for safety, effectiveness, or quality before they're sold.

Can I use HSA or FSA money?

PlushCare says HSA/FSA funds can pay for visits, its doctors' prescriptions and referred labs, but not membership; its billing policy confirms card acceptance for visits. Ro's payment FAQ says it does not accept HSA/FSA cards, but provides receipts for possible reimbursement. Check the specific expense with your account administrator; card acceptance and eligibility are different questions.

Is Ro or PlushCare better for weight loss?

We found no head-to-head evidence in the sources we checked that either company produces better weight loss. Results depend on the medicine, dose, your health, and ongoing care. Choose on care style, medicine access, and total cost.

What if I'm not prescribed anything?

At Ro, if you're never prescribed medicine after the first review, Ro says it refunds your purchase and doesn't start the renewing membership. At PlushCare, a completed evaluation can remain billable even without a prescription. Its policy allows appointment refunds for inability to assess or treat you and certain technical or licensing failures.
