Victoza vs Saxenda: Same Drug, Two Very Different Jobs

By The RX Index Editorial Team · Last verified

Victoza vs Saxenda is the same medicine under two brands. Both are liraglutide, a daily GLP-1 shot from Novo Nordisk. Victoza is FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes (up to 1.8 mg a day). Saxenda is FDA-approved for weight loss (up to 3 mg a day). Saxenda's brand ends with last wholesaler shipments in late January 2027.

The real choice is which labeled use you need, what your plan covers, and whether a weekly GLP-1 is a better next step. Below: doses, labels, 2026 prices, generics and when to ask about a weekly option.

The RX Index is the independent GLP-1 decision resource that scores telehealth providers and treatment paths on clinical legitimacy, care quality, transparency, access and cost.

Saxenda's label goes higher because it was studied for weight loss. Victoza stops at 1.8 mg and adds a heart-risk indication for adults with type 2 diabetes and established heart disease. Diagnosis, coverage and budget decide the fit.

Are Victoza and Saxenda the same drug?

Yes. Both pens contain liraglutide at 6 mg per mL. They are branded, dosed and labeled for different jobs.

  • Victoza is the diabetes brand. Its label covers blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes for adults and children 10 and older, and lowering the risk of major heart events in adults who already have type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
  • Saxenda is the weight-loss brand. Its label covers weight reduction and long-term weight maintenance, with diet and exercise, in adults with obesity or overweight plus a weight-related condition, and in teens 12 and older who weigh more than 60 kg and have obesity.

Do not take both at once. Each label says not to combine liraglutide products, and Saxenda also says not to combine it with any other GLP-1. Your prescriber decides.

For weekly semaglutide comparisons, see Victoza vs Ozempic and Saxenda vs Ozempic. The GLP-1 FDA indications chart maps every approved use.

How do the doses differ?

Both start at 0.6 mg once a day. Victoza then steps to 1.2 mg, and may go to 1.8 mg. Saxenda keeps climbing weekly through 1.2, 1.8 and 2.4 mg to a 3 mg maintenance dose.

These are label facts, not DIY dosing instructions. Injection sites (abdomen, thigh or upper arm) and missed-dose rules are in each Instructions for Use. A clinician decides how to start, stop or switch.

Which works better for weight loss?

Saxenda is the liraglutide brand studied and approved for weight loss. Victoza is not FDA-approved for weight management, even though the same molecule can reduce appetite as a side effect of diabetes treatment.

On Saxenda's own label, after 56 weeks:

Which works better for weight loss?
Trial populationSaxendaPlacebo
Adults with obesity or overweight plus a comorbidity (Study 1)7.4% weight loss3.0%
Adults with type 2 diabetes and overweight or obesity (Study 2)5.4% weight loss1.7%

If the question is whether a weekly GLP-1 beats Saxenda's dose, the closest head-to-head is STEP 8. Adults without diabetes on weekly semaglutide 2.4 mg (the Wegovy dose) lost 15.8% of body weight over 68 weeks, versus 6.4% on daily liraglutide 3.0 mg (the Saxenda dose). From a ~230 lb start, that's about 36 lb vs about 15 lb (our math). Stomach side effects were common on both. STEP 8 did not test Victoza's diabetes doses.

Victoza vs Saxenda for type 2 diabetes

Victoza is the diabetes product. In the LEADER trial on its label, adults with type 2 diabetes and high heart risk had a first major adverse heart event in 13.0% on Victoza vs 14.9% on placebo (hazard ratio 0.87). Saxenda is not approved to treat type 2 diabetes, and its label says pediatric type 2 diabetes use has not been established.

If blood sugar and heart risk are the main goals, ask about Victoza, a Victoza generic, or a weekly diabetes GLP-1 such as Ozempic. See our best GLP-1 for diabetes guide.

Side effects and safety

Both labels carry the same boxed warning: in rodents, liraglutide caused thyroid C-cell tumors, and it is unknown whether that happens in people. Do not use Victoza or Saxenda if you or a family member has had medullary thyroid cancer (MTC), or if you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).

Common stomach side effects show up on both labels. The percentages below come from each drug's own placebo-controlled trials, in different populations, so they are not head-to-head:

Side effects and safety
Nausea in each label's own trialsPlaceboDrug
Victoza 1.2 mg (type 2 diabetes trials)5%18%
Victoza 1.8 mg (type 2 diabetes trials)5%20%
Saxenda 3 mg (adult weight-loss trials)13.8%39.3%

Both labels also warn about pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, kidney injury from fluid loss, severe stomach reactions, allergic reactions, and low blood sugar with insulin or a sulfonylurea. Saxenda adds a heart-rate warning and says to stop if pregnancy is recognized. Victoza's pregnancy wording is benefit-vs-risk with the clinician.

Get medical help for severe belly pain that will not go away, an allergic reaction, or a neck lump or swelling.

Victoza vs Saxenda cost (as of November 5, 2026)

At list price, Saxenda costs more per month because the maintenance dose is higher and the pack is five pens. Lined up to about 30 days:

Generic Victoza-strength liraglutide is far cheaper per box than brand Victoza. Saxenda-strength generic is about half of brand list at Cost Plus. Ask for the right pack: 2- or 3-pen boxes are diabetes (Victoza) generics; the 5-pen box is the weight-management (Saxenda) generic.

Saxenda has had no manufacturer savings offer for new patients since June 30, 2023. Victoza.com says it is covered by most major plans, including Medicare and Medicaid (Novo's claim). Your plan sets the copay.

A year of brand Saxenda at list is about $16,400 (our math). A year of Wegovy pens at NovoCare's $349 cash price is $4,537 for 13 four-week fills. That gap is why many Saxenda patients ask about a weekly switch before January 2027.

Is Saxenda being discontinued? What about Victoza?

Saxenda brand: yes. Novo Nordisk says last shipments to wholesalers are in late January 2027, and that the decision is not about safety or quality. FDA's shortage database, checked November 5, 2026, lists Saxenda as limited availability until discontinuation in January 2027. Novo customer care: 1-800-727-6500.

Victoza brand: not discontinued in the US. FDA lists brand Victoza as limited availability from a shipping delay (duration "TBD"). Victoza-strength generics from several makers are listed as available.

Generics: Victoza generics have been available since Teva's authorized generic in June 2024, with Hikma and others following. Saxenda generics have FDA approvals from Teva, Biocon and Orbicular (Cipla); Teva's 5-pen product is on FDA's discontinuation list (posted May 14, 2026). Ask which maker your pharmacy stocks.

Frequently asked questions

Is Victoza the same as Saxenda?

They contain the same active drug, liraglutide. Victoza is branded and dosed for type 2 diabetes (up to 1.8 mg daily). Saxenda is branded and dosed for weight loss (up to 3 mg daily). Do not take both together.

Which is stronger, Victoza or Saxenda?

Saxenda's maintenance dose (3 mg) is higher than Victoza's top dose (1.8 mg). "Stronger" still depends on the goal: Saxenda was studied for weight loss at 3 mg; Victoza for blood sugar and heart outcomes at diabetes doses.

Is Saxenda being discontinued?

Yes. Novo Nordisk says last shipments to wholesalers are in late January 2027. FDA lists the brand as available until then, with limited availability. Generic liraglutide 3 mg from other makers may still be an option; ask your pharmacist which manufacturer they have.

Is Victoza being discontinued?

Not in the United States, based on FDA's shortage database checked November 5, 2026. Brand Victoza is listed as limited availability because of a shipping delay. Generics are listed as available.

How much do Victoza and Saxenda cost?

As of November 5, 2026, Victoza lists at $543.51 for 2 pens or $815.27 for 3 pens. Saxenda lists at $1,349.02 for 5 pens. Generic liraglutide at Cost Plus was $97.80 (2-pen Victoza strength, out of stock), $139.20 (3-pen, in stock) and $716.50 (5-pen Saxenda strength, in stock), before shipping.

Can I switch from Saxenda to Victoza, or the other way?

Only with your prescriber. The labeled uses and doses differ, and each label warns against combining liraglutide products. A switch is a clinical decision, not a pharmacy substitution.

Is there a generic for Victoza and Saxenda?

Yes for both. Victoza-strength generics (2- and 3-pen packs) have been available since 2024. Saxenda-strength generics (5-pen packs) have FDA approvals from Teva, Biocon and Orbicular/Cipla; Teva's version is on FDA's discontinuation list, so confirm the maker at the pharmacy.

Should I move to a weekly GLP-1 instead?

Often worth asking if you are on Saxenda before the brand ends, paying cash near list price, or want fewer injections. In STEP 8, the Wegovy dose of semaglutide outperformed Saxenda's dose for weight loss. Coverage and history still decide. Ro posts weekly cash prices and a free coverage check for certain pens.
